What is BMR?

Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the energy your body uses to keep vital functions running — breathing, circulation, cell production — while you're completely at rest. It typically accounts for 60–70% of the calories you burn each day.

BMR vs TDEE

BMR is rest only. Once you add daily movement and exercise, you get your TDEE — the number you actually use to plan fat loss or muscle gain. The panel above shows your TDEE across common activity levels.

Frequently asked questions

Which formula does this use?

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation, considered the most accurate for the general population.

Can I eat below my BMR to lose weight faster?

It's generally not advised. Eating well under your BMR for long periods can cost you muscle and make dieting harder to sustain. A moderate deficit from your TDEE is safer.
